A timer job is windows service for SharePoint 2010. The service performs a task, such as sending e-mail alerts, unpublished the articles etc
. These timer Jobs has properties to run at the specific schedule time
. Here is the link you can use to read description of these timer jobs and how often they run. From CA, Power Shell and using .net you can change their properties.
You may want to include the Service Pack 1 and CUs into the installation process of a new environment you are building
